Plant Detail

Juniperus squamata |Blue Star|

Juniperus Squamata is commonly called single-seed juniper because each fleshy, elliptic, blackish, berry-like seed cone it produces contains only one seed. It is native to mountainous areas from Afghanistan to China and Taiwan. It grows somewhat variably in the wild, from prostrate ground cover to spreading shrubs to upright shrubs/small trees. Awl-shaped, sharply-pointed, gray-green to blue-green needles (to 5/16” long) appear in whorls of three. Each needle has a gray-white band.

  • Grows up to 2-3 ft. tall (30-90 cm) and 3-4 ft. wide (30-120 cm).
  • A full sun lover, this plant is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerates a wide range of soils including poor soils, dry soils, and sandy soils. Somewhat intolerant of hot and humid growing conditions. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Perfect as a specimen shrub, foundation plant, for the rock gardens, or massed to form a bushy groundcover.
  • Low maintenance, no pruning required.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings
